The square was the centre of the ancient town. It was the place where the major part of the life of ancient people took place. The ancient towns in Ancient Greece called it agora, while in ancient Rome it was called forum. Various public buildings were situated around the square – city hall, stores, library, and even temples during the Roman period. Most ancient towns also had a theatre. The residential areas were built around the centre. Nowadays in some modern towns you can find clearly preserved parts of ancient towns.
