According to Greek mythology, Apollo was born on this tiny island in the Cyclades archipelago. The sanctuary, dedicated to Apollo since remote past, attracted pilgrims from all over Greek world, and Delos developed as a prosperous international port. A telling proof of that is the discovered exceptionally extensive and rich archeological site. Its ruins bear traces of the succeeding civilizations in the Aegean world, from the 3rd millennium before Christ to the early Christian era.
