The monastery of Horezu in Valcea was founded in 1690 by Prince Constantine Brancovan. It was built and decorated in the specific Romanian 'Brancovan' style and is considered a masterpiece of it. The monastery’s architectural style is pure and balanced, and its sculptural and painted decoration is exceptionally rich and varied. The school of mural and icon painting established at the monastery in the 18th century was famous throughout the region of South Eastern Europe.
