Villa of Mogorjelo

What: Ancient Site
Where: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Capljina
When: Rome

In the middle of the 1st century an Italic settler built a private manor complex for agricultural purposes in the Mogorjelo region. In the 3rd century the building was burned down and in the early 4th century, a villa was built over the ruins, which now forms the major feature of the archaeological complex. The main building in was a large palace with numerous rooms. The rooms on the upper floor were designed as luxury accommodation, with mosaic floors and walls decorated with artificial marble.
The estate was destroyed in a major fire. In the mid-5th century, two basilicas were erected within the ruined walls of the former villa. This archaeological site has not only exceptional artistic value, it is also a valuable evidence of the Late Roman epoch just on the eve of the coming Middle Ages.
