Preslav
ABOUT THE TREASURE
Preslav is a typical medieval city. Its builders constructed two defence walls, one into the other. Today one can judge about the power and grandeur of the city by the preserved remains of the large palace hall and the chambers for serving the kings.
In turn, the Round Church calls for the admiration of all and sundry. It is called so because its plan constitutes an amazingly precise circle. People also call it the Golden Church because of its gilded dome. According to annals, it was decorated with fantastic mosaics. The church was built on a hill outside the city walls so that everyone could enjoy the view of it from a distance.
A total of 150 beautiful objects have also been found in Preslav. A unique ceramic icon of St. Theodore Stratelates dating from the 10th century was also found near Preslav. It consists of 20 colour plates. This masterpiece of medieval art laid the foundations of Bulgarian icon painting.
