ABOUT THE TREASURE

Tangible HeritageWhat: Tomb
Where: Bulgaria, Kazanlak
When: Thracians

Near Seutopolis, the capital city of the Thracian king Seutes III, they found the remains of a large necropolis (in Greek –“town of the dead” –  burial ground). In 1944 a perfectly preserved tomb dating from 4th century before Christ was found inside a hillock within the necropolis. The tomb was built of stone and consists of two parts: a narrow corridor and a round burial chamber, covered by a cupola, in which the sarcophagus was placed. The corridor and the chamber are both decorated with frescoes, which are the best-preserved masterpieces from the Hellenic period painting in Bulgaria. The pictures of the dead man and his wife, of his relatives and servants, and even of his horses, are really magnificent. Besides they give valuable information about Thracian customs and culture.
