Roman Villa Armira, archaeological site
ABOUT THE TREASURE
Villa Armira is one of richest villas from the Roman age found on Bulgarian territory to date. The vast area of the building (almost 1,000 square metres) as well as its structure and decoration show that it was built for a person of great wealth and love of luxury. The large inner courtyard was surrounded by colonnades and had a pool at the centre. The rooms on the southern side had an underfloor heating system. The residence and the courtyard were lavishly decorated. More than 3,000 architectural and decorative fragments have been discovered here: large fragments of mosaics, parts of the colonnades, marble parapets, wall tiles, frames and window gratings, columns with the head of the god Hermes in the upper part, etc. Villa Armira is an invaluable heritage site precisely because of its decoration.
