Essay about the church The Holy Trinity, Asenovgrad, Bulgaria, European Heritage Days
The church was constructed in 1853. From 1853 till 1857 it was painted. The icons were painted by Greek artists. During those times the services were on Greek. The icons on the iconostasis are; to the right – Jesus Christ, to the left – Virgin Mary. Next to the icon of Virgin Mary is the icon of the church “The Holy Trinity”.
The Holy Trinity is the symbol of God Son, God Father and the Holy Spirit.
During the time of the Old Testament, Abraham and Sara were visited by three youth angels, holding three wooden scepters. Those three young men told Sara that she would give birth to a boy, and she laughed, as she was too old. The hosts invited their guests for a drink and they left. Afterwards Sara decided to cook and made a fire. She took the three wooden scepters and wanted to burn them, but it did not happen.
At that time Abraham was Archbishop and his father-in-law came to him for confession of a big sin. After listening to him, Abraham told to his father-in-law to take the three wooden scepters, to plant them in his garden and to pour them with water from the Jordan river. The man wanted to do what he had to, but always when he decided to pour them with water, he either met someone thirsty, or his monkey poured out the water. With the God mercy, sometime after, he managed to pour water on them and they started to grow. The trees were pevka, cedar and cypress wood. The tree woods grew together and became one trunk with three crowns.
When they started to build the Jerusalem temple, they cut the wood and wanted to use it, but it didn’t fit and they left it. When Jesus was sentenced to death by crucifixion, his cross was made by that very tree. That is why the chant says: “You are crucified on three-component tree, Our Lord”, not as known up-to-now – on ebony tree.
