ABOUT THE TREASURE
The St. Nicolas Monastery is near the village of Manastir. It is the oldest among several medieval monasteries in the vicinity of Prilep that have survived to the present day. This is indicated by an inscription on the southern wall of the monastery church, according to which the church was built in 1095 by the monk Alexios. The monk was a kinsman of the Byzantine emperor Alexius I (1081–1118), the founder of the Comnenian Dynasty. The church has superb frescoes from the 13th century. They are among the finest examples of the ‘Golden Age’ of Byzantine culture. Most of the monastery buildings were destroyed in the First World War. One of them was restored in the interwar period.
