This fortress, also known as the ‘Castle’ or ‘Citadel’, existed long before the name of Jajce was first mentioned in written sources. The fortress was built in Antiquity and survived until the mid-19th century. It has a special place among the towns of medieval Bosnia because it is the only fortified settlement that had all features of a developed urban centre as early as the 15th century. The architectural monuments preserved in Jajce demonstrate the speciality of medieval art as well as the course of history in these lands.
