The settlement, known as Halicarnassos in Antiquity, is the cradle of several civilizations. This important Aegean port, a target of countless invasions, was ruled by Persians, Macedonians, Romans, Byzantines, Seljukids and Knights of Rhodes and several principalities until in the 16th century.
The most impressive among its monuments are the medieval castle, the narrow winding streets, white Mediterranean houses with blue windows and bays of breathtaking beauty. Historian Heredotus was born here. Bodrum also houses the Mausoleum to King Mausolos of Caria, which is one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
