ABOUT THE TREASURE

Tangible HeritageWhat: Tomb
Where: Greece, Imathia
When: Ancient Greece

The city of Aigai, the ancient first capital of the Kingdom of Macedonia, was discovered in the 19th century near Vergina. The most important remains are the monumental palace, lavishly decorated with mosaics and mural paintings, and the burial ground with more than 300 tumuli. Some of them date from the 11th century before Christ, and one of the royal tombs in the Great Tumulus is considered to be that of Philip II. That king conquered all the Greek cities, paving the way for the conquests of his son Alexander who established Hellenic domination over almost all the world they knew.
