ABOUT THE TREASURE
The Panagyurishte gold treasure has been bequeathed to us from the time of the ancient Thracians. An exquisite set consisting of a large tray and eight cups, called rhytons, has reached us from those times. Some of the rhytons were crafted as animal heads. On others, the ancient masters engraved in relief fairytale heroic scenes. This is how these treasures bring us the myths about the brave women warriors, the amazons, about the lavish wedding of God Dionysus and Ariadne - the beautiful princess from the Island of Crete. The handles of the biggest receptacle from the treasure are shaped as extraordinary creatures: half-men, half-horses, called Centaurs. Between them the hand of the craftsman depicted the myth of the battle of the small God Heracles with two snakes.
We still do not know the secret of the gold receptacles of the Panagyurishte treasure. Who made them, why were they hidden deep underground? Go and see them in the National Museum of History in Sofia and maybe you will be able to solve the mystery.
