Rogozen Treasure
ABOUT THE TREASURE
Not long ago, in 1985, in the village of Rogozen, a man started digging a trench in his garden. Suddenly something glittering caught his eye. He thus discovered a hole containing more than sixty beautiful silver receptacles: jugs, trays and a goblet. Archaeologists came to help and reckoned there should be more buried treasures, so they started digging. They were quick to find a second hole containing another 100 silver receptacles.
These finds are now called the Rogozen Treasure, bearing the name of the village where they were found. The scenes embossed in relief on the receptacles depict the beliefs of the ancient Thracian people and tell exciting stories from the Greek mythology. The receptacles also tell the names of various Thracian kings carved on them by master engravers.
The Rogozen Treasure is the biggest Thracian treasure found so far. To enjoy it, visit the National Historical Museum in Sofia.
