The Mediterranean Island of Crete is the cradle of the Minoan civilization of some 4,000 years ago. It is named after the legendary King Minos. According to the myths, King Minos made another mythical hero, Daidalos, construct a labyrinth - a building with hundreds of corridors and premises, in which he closed the Minotaur, a half-man half-bull monster. You can see the Labyrinth today, which is actually the Palace of King Minos in Knossos. It constitutes an enormous building with numerous halls, rooms, storerooms and workshops. It was admired by all and this gave rise to the legend of the Minotaur and the Labyrinth in which it was shut.
The Palace of Knossos was discovered by the archaeologist Minos Kalokairinos in the 19th century. Even today you will be surprised by the size of the construction. You will see rooms decorated with frescoes of Goddesses, flowers, bulls and dolphins. You will also see large half-buried pots known as pithos, so big that they can easily hold several people. In these pots the people of Crete stored different provisions – wheat, olive oil and wine.
