ABOUT THE TREASURE
The remains of the sanctuary at Sounion stand tall on the southernmost edge of the Attica Peninsula on a rock rising above the sea. There the Ancient Greeks worshiped their Gods Poseidon and Athena. In Ancient times it was one of the most important sanctuaries on Attica and even Homer mentions it in “The Odyssey”. If you visit Sounion today you will see the remains of two places of worship – one of Poseidon, the mighty God of the Sea, on a cliff cape surrounded by water, and the other, slightly further inland, of the Goddess of Wisdom, Athena.
