ABOUT THE TREASURE
The settlement of Anafiotika was founded in the 19th century by craftsmen from the Island of Anafi of the Cycladic Islands group and was named after them. The craftsmen came to work in the capital of modern Greece. They built their houses on the steep rocky slopes of the Acropolis in the traditional style of their island, gradually forming a small “village” in the heart of Athens. Walking along the narrow streets of Anafiotika you will see little whitewashed houses against the background of the impressive Acropolis. The houses are so close to each other that in the hot summer evenings neighbours sit outside and share their suppers.
