ABOUT THE TREASURE

Tangible HeritageWhat: Theatre
Where: Greece, Argolis
When: Ancient Greece

The ancient cult complex of Epidaurus is located in a small valley in the Peloponnesus and sprawls out over several terraces on the stepped terrain. The cult of Asclepius (later called Esculap by the Romans) first began there in the 6th century before Christ. In the following ages many more temples and hospital buildings were constructed in this vast site, dedicated to the health cult of the Hellenic and Roman epochs. But most remarkable are the monuments of 4th century before Christ among which the theatre stands out as one of the masterpieces of ancient Greek architecture.
