The town of Ohrid is situated on the shores of Lake Ohrid. Some of the oldest traces of human settlements in Europe have been found on its territory. The town was built mainly between 7th and 19th centuries. Located here is the oldest orthodox monastery - St Pantelejmon, housing more than 800 Byzantine-style icons dating from the 11th to the end of the 14th century. After those of the Tretiakov Gallery in Moscow, this is considered to be the most important collection of Orthodox icons in the world.
