Heraclea Linkestis (fourth century before Christ to sixth century) is located in a fertile valley south of Bitola, 15 kilometers from the border with Greece. Heraclea is mentioned for the first time by Demosthenes in his First Philippic (349 before Christ) . The city appears on all known maps from the period as a station on Via Egnatia. In the first centuries of the Christian Era Heraclea became a Roman colony and developed as an important urban centre. This is indicated by a number of valuable finds from the period, such as the remains of a court house, thermal baths, and a theatre.
