ABOUT THE TREASURE
This archaeological site is near the village of Morodvis in Eastern Macedonia. In the days of Samuil (10 century) and later, in the age of the Byzantine Empire, this was the site of the mediaeval town of Morobisdon. Because of its strategic location on the road crossing the Struma and Vardar rivers, as well as in proximity to several silver mines, the town was of major economic importance. It was also the centre of an eparchy and played a significant role in the political and spiritual life of Eastern Macedonia from the 9th to the 15th centuries. In the course of excavations initiated in 1980, archaeologists discovered an Early Christian underground crypt from the fifth century, known as Crkvishte.
