The Monastery of Lesnovo is a very famous mediaeval literary centre. It was founded in the 11th century by the hermit Gabriel of Lesnovo. The monastery church, built in 1341, is dedicated to the Archangel Gabriel. It has very valuable frescoes from the 14th century, the finest of which are two double portraits. One of them is of King Dushan and his wife Elena, and the other of Jovan Oliver (the founder of the church) and his wife Oliverina. Jovan Oliver holds a model of the church. The woodcarved iconostasis, crafted between 1811 and 1814, is fascinating too. It is regarded as one of the masterpieces of the school of Peter Philipovich-Garkata, active in this region in the first half of the 19th century.
