The Catholic Cathedral of Timisoara was designed by the famous wienese architect Josef Emmanuel Fischer von Erlach. It was erected between 1736-1754 in the main square of Timisoara (Temeswar), to celebrate the freedom brought by Austria and Christianity to the region, formerly occupied by the turks (up to 1718). The design respects the cornice and the general height of the Liberty Square where the building is located.
