The town is situated along the slopes of two adjacent valleys. It was founded in the early 14th century during the Middle Ages. The street network was in harmony with the life style and the natural environment. In 1951 the construction of the Istanbul-Ankara highway destroyed part of the town. Public reaction limited the scope of the construction and the settlement was preserved until about 1970. Due to the difficult transport, the population gradually decreased and the family traditions in the building crafts were ruptured. A plan to preserve the town was approved in 1991, but its implementation has proved difficult in the absence of modern equipment and good professionals in the town.
