The original fortress was part of the defence system against the Venetian naval invasions. It was built in 1659 by Hatice Turhan Sultan. Before the spring of 1997 when the fortress was opened to the public, it had been a Turkish naval outpost. A project is being implemented at the moment to turn the military installation into an open-air museum.
