The town is located 25 km away to the north of Izmir in a well preserved natural environment. It keeps many and various buildings from different historic periods: churches, tombs, caravanserais, hamams and fountains. The houses are composed of a stone masonry ground floor and timber-framed upper floor with bay windows, arranged around a courtyard. The streets follow the terrain and create beautiful skylines. The town is also famous for its rugs and woven articles.
