ABOUT THE TREASURE

What: Catholic Church
Where: Croatia, Pazin, Istria
When: High Middle Ages

In the 12th century there was a small Benedictine monastery here. In 1459 it became the property of the Paulines, who enlarged and remodelled it. The Monastery of Sveti Petar u Šumi acquired its present form in 1731, and its church dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul was consecrated in 1755. The monastery was the cultural, economic and educational centre of this part of Istria. Its architecture is of amazing quality, by far superior to the local tradition. The inventory of the church – organ, altars, leather wall panels – is of high artistic value too.
