ABOUT THE TREASURE
Where: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Pocitelj
When: Late Middle Ages, Baroque
The town was first mentioned in written documents in 1444. The Medieval town walls surround the entire town complex of Pochitelj. The residential areas are laid out on the slopes. In their upper and lower zones are situated the gardens of the city. The Mosque minaret and the Clock tower are the two vertical axes in this picturesque landscape, together with the magnificent natural setting. A lot of remarkable historical assets are preserved in the town – the Medieval fortress, the Mosque of Shishman Ibrahim-pasha (16th century) – one of the best examples of the classical Islamic domed mosques in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Madrassa, Hamam, Han, Clock-tower and the residential ensemble. The largest and most significant residential building is the Gavrankapetanovich House built in the 16th - 17th centuries. A program of permanent protection of the historic town of Pochitelj is underway at present.
