Franciscan monastery at Humac
ABOUT THE TREASURE
The monastery lies between the town of Ljubushki and the river of Trebizhat. 2000 years ago the Romans built a military stronghold Bigestae on this site. In the 10th or 11th century in the vicinity of the Humac monastery existed the Church of St. Michael. The monastery itself was founded in 1454. In 1867 began the reconstruction of the monastery in its present-day image.
The monastery hosts the oldest museum in Bosnia and Herzegovina, founded in 1884. The monastery library, holding around 20,000 volumes, can be traced back to 1855. Several old wood-carved altars have special artistic value. Their architectural concept and the specific features of their ornaments are typical for the golden altars that appeared in the period between 1650 and 1670.
