Melnik
ABOUT THE TREASURE
Where: Bulgaria, Melnik
When: Late Middle Ages, National Revival / Brankovani
Melnik is the smallest town in Bulgaria. Even from most ancient times there was a Thracian settlement here. Later the Romans settled in this place. In the Middle Ages Despot Slav chose the mountain town for his home and built a castle. The strong walls of its buildings have survived the centuries and today rise in the centre of the town.
Melnik is famous for its National Revival houses, skillfully ingrained by the master builders amidst picturesque rock pyramids. And there, in the rocks beneath the houses, cellars have been hewn for wine. The wine in the cellars matures in enormous barrels. Thanks to it the wine-makers from Melnik amassed riches and built beautiful houses.
The largest and the most beautiful one is the Kordopoulov house. It is amazing with its dainty wooden ceilings. The enormous rooms are richly furnished. Mysterious colourful light comes through the stained glass windows. Don’t miss the large cellar. You will find yourself in a series of mysterious labyrinths in the rock beneath the house. There you will see the large wooden barrels.
