Perperikon
ABOUT THE TREASURE
Where: Bulgaria, Kurdjali
When: Prehistory, Thracians, Early Middle Ages
Perperikon is located in the Eastern Rhodopes, 15 kilometres to the northeast of present-day Kurdjali.
The first sanctuary at Perperikon dates back to the distant 6000-5000 before Christ. At that time the temples there were ordinary huts with adobe walls. Later the people hewed a new sanctuary in the rocks. There the priests officiated at rituals, made libations with wine and lighted fires, which they used for prophecies.
In the first centuries after Christ the rock structures developed into an entire city with fortification walls, palaces and other buildings. In the beginning of the 5th century, after the conversion to Christianity, the rock city became an episcopal seat and the pagan temples were turned into churches. At the end of the 14th century the fortress was attacked and destroyed and the ruins were forgotten. Today the impressive rock city shines white amidst the green of the Rhodopes. Climb up there and a wonderful view of the valley will spread before your eyes.
