The Cathedral of St. James, Sibenik
ABOUT THE TREASURE
The Cathedral of St James in Sibenik on the Dalmatian coast was built in the course of more than a hundred years between 1431 and 1535. It is the work of three architects who succeeded one another in its construction - Francesco di Giacomo, Georgius Mathei Dalmaticus and Niccolo di Giovanni Fiorentino. They developed a structure built entirely from stone and unique construction techniques were used for the vaulting and the dome. The Cathedral’s decoration and especially the remarkable frieze with 71 sculptured faces of men, women, and children successfully fuse the features of Gothic and Renaissance art. The architectural and artistic character of the cathedral shows that in the 15th and 16th centuries there was considerable exchange in the field of monumental arts between Northern Italy, Dalmatia and Tuscany.
